11 Ways To Create A Layered Living Room

With all that’s going on in the world today, it’s more important than ever to love where you live. We are big believers that everyone deserves to come home to a safe and serene space – free from chaos and outside noise. This feeling of comfort can start with your living room. Creating an enjoyable space that allows you to unwind is truly important to your overall health and wellness. We’ll walk you through 11 ways that you can create this peace in your own home.

1. Bring in POPS of plant life.

A variety of different species of plants will help to emphasize a layered and lived-in vibe in your most used room. Grab greenery of different sizes, shapes and texture to create your very own oasis.

2. Mix old and new.

One way to make your space sing is to mix in both vintage and newer pieces. This look creates for a comfortable space that appears curated over time, with weathered pieces living among more modern and polished ones.

3. WOW with wallpaper.

Bold printed paper has been making a HUGE comeback in the last few years – and we can totally understand why. It’s an easy way to add a layer of interest right onto your walls. Hang artwork on top of it for some serious bonus points.

4. Style your shelves.

I’m often asked what the secret to finishing off any space is – and STUFF is the answer. In order to make your home feel lived-in and layered, you need items of various textures, materials and sizes to fill it (think metals, ceramics and glass). When we style client projects, we mix in our vintage and curated items with the homeowner’s personal prized possessions to create a completely custom look.

5. Dare to do a printed piece of upholstery.

Now, you don’t have to go ALL OUT with a sofa (though we highly recommend it). Start small by selecting a quirky print for your chairs or an ottoman. Print and pattern add instant layers to any space.

6. Layer your rugs.

This is one of the easiest ways to add instant layers to your living room – and likely even something you could do with your existing rug. Just add a larger layer of jute underneath. This can really help to get the right scale of rug for your space if you are working with something that – maybe is beautiful – but a bit too small for the room.

7. Grow your gallery wall.

We’ve hung A LOT of gallery walls in our day. They are a great way to cover an empty wall. Let your art climb from floor to ceiling to bring a museum-quality touch to your home.

8. Print-mix your pillows.

We talked about printed upholstery above, but printed pillows can also really drive this layered look home. Mixing a bunch of complimentary patterns together is no easy feat – but when done right, makes all the difference. Print provides power, as further illustrated here.

9. Add different styles of lighting.

Lighting can often be overlooked in a living room – but it’s really important to get the right pieces in place. A variety of light sources is not only great for the overall pleasance of the space, but can also add visual interest. Here are some additional ideas on getting the lighting just right.

10. Be considerate with your selections.

This one sounds easier than it is – but don’t bring junk into your home. I’m not saying that every piece needs to be the star of the show, but be thoughtful with what you are choosing. If your space is feeling lackluster, start purging, people! It’s all about the edit.

11. Bring in different materials and textures.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – it’s all about the mix! When selecting fabric for your living room seating, don’t be one-note. Mix linens with velvets and leathers. An assortment of materials and textures will come together to make the space feel cohesive and yes, LAYERED.
