Reveal: Oh So Smitten In Society Hill

Welcome to “Oh So Smitten in Society Hill!” We invite you to explore all the ways in which we layered patterns, united color stories, introduced playful art pieces and more to answer our clients call to create a colorful and eclectic home that reflects their personal whimsy while meeting their distinctive needs.

When these clients contacted us after closing on their first home, they were eager to maximize style and color throughout the new abode and sought some much needed help on the logistical side of things. Moving a large piece of furniture with one’s partner is often an invitation for discord and after one too many ill-measured orders and jammed doorways, they sought professional help in the form of Michelle Gage Interiors.

In addition to project management, they desired a home that was a true reflection of their personal aesthetic while meeting their functional needs for entertaining, relaxation and work. Like many older Philadelphia homes, this Society Hill property greets you with a long open floor plan upon entry and our clients requested a creative way to connect both sides of the room to function as their entry, living and dining spaces.

The living room is grounded by the cheeriest, curved velvet sofa and accompanied by two round-backed swivel chairs to create flexible and dynamic seating areas. From there, we layered several rugs to expand the footprint of the living area and placed a stunning burl credenza just between the living and dining spaces to unite the two areas.

The upholstered bench and pair of block-printed stools provide additional seating that can move with the party throughout the space. After living abroad in India, our client was eager to incorporate the colorful block prints from the region and we adopted these motifs as a throughline in the home’s overall design.

To create a more soothing sleep space, we wrapped the primary bedroom in a moody navy grasscloth paired with matching blackout shades. By layering a large jute rug below, we elevated the client’s existing vintage rug and carried its dynamic color palette through to the eclectic bedding and curvaceous reading chair. The mother of pearl inlaid nightstands introduce a serene, tonal layer of pattern, while the curved dresser mimics the organic lines found in the suspended bubble pendant lights. All of these thoughtful elements combine to create a space calm enough to lull them to sleep while still reflecting the home’s vibrant, colorful aesthetic.

Pops of eclectic, high-quality artwork truly set this project apart. We introduced several pieces throughout the home and seamlessly incorporated them with the homeowner’s existing collection of family heirlooms, personal photographs and quirky prints. After a quick trip to the framers for some of the existing pieces, we employed our team of professional art installers to make sure each item was perfectly placed and hung.

Throughout the home, we focused our efforts on making big aesthetic impacts without the need for renovation. Each space is finished off with playful prints on throw pillows, high-quality custom upholstery and a mix of vintage, wool and price point rugs to meet each rooms unique needs and tie the home together. By concentrating our use of paint and paper and sourcing smaller, easily movable items, we provided our clients with a tailored environment that will grow with them for years to come.

Some kudos from our client:

“The Michelle Gage team was a joy to work with, and I’m extremely happy with the way everything turned out. In addition to the actual design work, I was blown away their project management and communication. I wish we could use them for all of the work we get done on our home!”
