Michelle Gage’s Top 4 Favorite Flea Markets EVER (2 on the East Coast)

I’ve been to A LOT of flea markets in my day. I lust after vintage decor and will move heaven and earth to bring a good find home with me. A flea market or antique shop makes its way onto nearly every one of my trip itineraries. What’s more thrilling than shopping all around the world!?

Let’s dive into my favorite fleas and take a look at some of the one-of-a-kind gems we’ve snuck into clients’ homes.

BRIMFIELD, MASSACHUSETT

Brimfield is the largest antique market in America, showcasing 5,000 dealers in 20+ fields. The town of Brimfield opens itself up for the market 3 times each year – in May, July and September. I have visited half a dozen times and am heading back this September. The hotels can book up months in advance, so be sure to book early!

You name it, Brimfield has it! The prices vary – some high, some low – so there is something for everyone. There is lots of variety among the sellers, not only in what they sell but how they sell it. Some tents are highly curated and feel as if they are a true store; others will have you digging in boxes to find the good stuff.

PARIS, FRANCE

The Paris flea market (Saint Ouen) is the largest antique market in the world. It is comprised of 2,500 stores, spread across 15 markets. This antique market is worth planning a trip around. I have been several times and ALWAYS come back with some seriously unique pieces. While in Paris this January, I found 14 incredible original works of art for our Pittsburgh project…which I proudly brought back on the airplane. I do not suggest this method and have since secured more proper logistics – but when you get the last-minute green light to go HAM on picking, you figure it out!

SUNBURY, ENGLAND

The Sunbury Market comes from modest beginnings; it’s family-operated and has evolved into the largest and longest-running market in England. This market offers a vast range of antique goods – including furniture, silverware, jewelry, ceramics, paintings, books and more. This event is held at a race track outside of London twice a month.

I have been to many markets in London, England but my first trip to Sunbury was this past June. I had planned to shop this market and bop around to a few others later in the day. However, as I wandered through Sunbury, I found myself in new alleys and at new booths – as if the market never truly ended! I remarked to Alex that it felt like the “Brimfield of England.” While not quite that large, Sunbury had one of the largest UK markets I have ever seen. It’s outside of the city. I highly recommend the train; we came back with so many treasures!

ADAMSTOWN, PA

For those living in Philadelphia, Adamstown is perfect for a weekend or day trip. This town is considered the antiques capital of the United States – and it’s right in Philadelphia’s backyard! The town is filled with many antique malls. A few times throughout the year, Adamstown hosts their extravaganza, which brings even more dealers to the area. My favorite stops are Renningers Market, Adam’s Antiques and Mad Hatter. The whole town is such a delight – you’re sure to find something special.
