How To Spend A Long Weekend In Winston Salem, North Carolina

First up, where to stay: The Cardinal introduces a new element of Southern sophistication and social elegance to downtown Winston-Salem. The hotel features stunning Art Deco details and maintains the luxury and charm of the historic architecture.

Named for the R.J. Reynolds family matriarch, The Katharine Brasserie & Bar is buzzing with energy and urban comfort, celebrating the best of what’s in season. Located inside The Cardinal, The Katharine presents timeless French brasserie dishes with a modern flair. The Katharine’s chic bar and strong cocktails, local craft beers and wine program are also not to be missed.

Once you’ve checked in and dropped your bags, head to Mozelle’s. Named after the owner’s grandmother, Mozelle’s serves classic favorites mixed with unexpected ingredients. Before you head out to explore Downtown, make sure to stop in at XO Home & Garden, located next door to Mozelle’s.

The Downtown Arts District is an eclectic collection of working artist studios, galleries, shops, residences, restaurants and night spots. While there are dozens of great shops and galleries, a few must-see spots include Mast General Store, Piedmont Craftsmen, Visual Index and Fancy Groceries.

For a little FUN, stop in Roar, a casual entertainment hall with a variety of food and games across 4 floors. Set to a Roaring ’20s theme, Roar features activities such as boutique bowling, interactive putt-putt, golf simulators and tons of arcade games.
For lunch head to Theodore’s Bar and Market, located in the Historic Reynolda Village serving fresh sandwiches and charcuterie. This cafe features such fun decor and delicious food – it was one of my favorite stops!

Reynolda House Museum of American Art is located at the center of Reynolda’s 180 acres and is considered a rare gem among the nation’s cultural institutions and historic green spaces. The museum presents a renowned art collection in a historic and incomparable setting: the original 1917 interiors of the country manor of R.J. and Katharine Reynolds. Spanning 250 years, the collection is an uncompromisingly selective one, a chronology of American art, with each artist represented by one work of major significance.

The 129 acres that comprise Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University were once at the center of Reynolda, the early 20th century estate of Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Reynolds and included a lake, golf course, formal gardens, greenhouses and woods. As part of her master plan, Katharine made sure the gardens were planted close to the road as a beautiful gift to the community to enjoy. Katharine also kept quite a vase collection in the main house as part of her flower-arranging room – it’s spectacular!

I could just go on and on raving about the food scene here. While I’ve already shared a few scrumptious stops, I cannot leave out Camino’s Bakery and Krankie’s. Make sure to stop in each spot for breakfast – you won’t be disappointed!

To round out our special trip, we took our first segway tour with Triad Adventures – so I’ll end things there, rolling off into our next trip!
